A New Hope for Cats with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)

As a cat lover who has lost three precious felines to FIP, I'm thrilled to share some promising news. Feline Infectious Peritonitis, once almost always fatal, now has a beacon of hope with the introduction of GS-441524 treatment in the U.S. Stokes Pharmacy, in collaboration with the Bova Group, announced on May 30, 2024, that they will provide a compounded oral formulation of GS-441524, available starting June 1, 2024.

This medication, initially developed as an injectable in 2018, has demonstrated impressive success in clinical trials conducted in Australia and the UK. Until now, desperate cat owners in the U.S. had to resort to unregulated sources to obtain this life-saving treatment. Fortunately, the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has now approved the legal compounding and prescription of GS-441524 under Guidance for Industry #256. The shift from an injectable to an oral formulation makes administering this treatment more convenient for cat owners.

However, a veterinary prescription is required to obtain GS-441524 for an FIP-infected cat. If you have questions or want to explore this treatment option, consult with your veterinarian to learn more about this groundbreaking therapy. This development offers a new chapter of hope for many cat owners and their beloved pets. Together, we can look forward to a future where FIP no longer claims the lives of our furry friends.
